The Goleta Valley Library is one of our community's most important public institutions. It receives over half a million visits a year and lends over 600,000 books and other materials to patrons. It serves 90,000 people: 30,000 in the City of Goleta, 60,000 in County Service Area 3.
The City Council of Goleta has directed staff to work with the City of Santa Barbara to transfer management of the library to the City of Goleta. The City of Santa Barbara's management fee will double in July 2017, adding greatly to the financial woes of our library.
This transfer is not a simple process, first because of legal processes at all levels from City to County to State as well as many additional local steps, from redoing bar codes on all books and materials to new contracts for our wonderful staff. A completion date would now be July 1, 2018.
