It has certainly been an “interesting” and very different summer for all of us and for the library. All programs are now online with great attendance. Over 900 children participated in the Summer Reading Program and read 8,200 books. This shows that kids don’t spend all their time on video games! Thanks to a generous grant from the Mithun Foundation, the Friends sponsored this annual program, its associated performances, and the weekly activity kits given to families. We are funding all children-related activities and programs this fall as well.
Our lectures this fall will be online. Check our website a few days before the event for the link or sign up for our mailing list at friendsoftheGVlibrary@gmail.com. The lectures will be available online afterwards with links on our website and on the library’s Facebook page.
Only permanent staff are allowed inside the library, no volunteers. The library usually functions with ten permanent staff and twenty to thirty volunteers. It now provides multiple services with only the permanent staff. Please tell our stressed-out staff how much you appreciate their work. Unfortunately, some people have used interactions with our librarians as outlets for their frustration after six months of confinement.
Libraries in the Black Gold system are not sharing books for health safety reasons. Patrons can only order curbside pick-up from the collections of the Goleta Valley Library, so the Friends gave $14,000 to purchase multiple copies of the latest best-sellers. We stepped in to greatly increase the funding for e-books and audiobooks on the library’s online platforms. In the meantime, our revenues from the book sale stopped mid-March. While half of our funding source is gone for the moment, the library needs are acute.
